When thinking about the skills pupils need to learn, as part of the PSD curriculum at Netherhall Mead, we start by thinking about what we want them to have achieved by the time they leave our school. What do they need to learn to help them survive in the big wide world?! The skills to be as independent as possible, to be able to socialise appropriately with other people and to keep themselves healthy and safe are three of the most important things that we want each of our pupils learn. If they can learn these skills, then they can leave Netherhall Mead as happy, heathy, confident members of the community. Which is why PSD is such a key part of every pupil’s learning.

PSD is taught throughout every day of the school week in all the daily routines that take place i.e. coming in from the bus, getting their own work out, break times, using the toilet, cooking. Learning can also take place as part of each half terms thematic planning i.e. Learning about fire safety when completing a theme on People Who Help Me.

We teach discrete aspects of PSD such as Relationships and Sex Education and Drugs Awareness, through clearly planned lessons and activities.

Our PSD Theme Days ensure that we regularly cover key topics such Internet Safety, Keeping Clean and Mental Health. Pupils also have opportunities to develop important PSD skills though out of school activities such as trips around the local area and work experience.
